New Polestar 1 could be sold for up to £134000

Polestar's first standalone vehicle - looks great and promises much, but should Volvo have made it a Volvo S90 Coupe instead? Weight is distributed within a 48:52 front-rear ratio.

The official word is the Polestar 1 will only be available through the Care by Volvo subscription program. The company is so serious about the new model and possibly other BEV models that it is building a brand new manufacturing facility next to the main factory in Stuttgart.

Volvo in July announced that every vehicle it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor.

Orders for the Polestar 1 can be taken now using the Polestar app. From 2017 onward, Polestar will be a separate company in the Volvo group that will be focused on design and production of high performance electric cars.

As a Flagship auto for Volvo, the S90 Coupe wouldn't have been a huge seller, but it would have signalled the development of the bloodline from the P1800, and made Volvo look cool and forward thinking. After a fixed term of two or three years, the vehicle will then be returned to Polestar for refurbishment, before being made available for customers to buy on another "pre-owned" subscription term. The mid-sized Polestar 2 will follow in late 2019 as a rival to the Tesla Model 3, while the Polestar 3 will be a larger SUV-style vehicle.

A Polestar subscription won't require a down payment, will include additional services and benefits such as rental access to vehicle accessories and alternative Polestar/Volvo models, and won't necessarily entail a trip to the dealership, with the availability of a purely Web-based sales experience.

At the end of the contract, you'll have to return the auto or Polestar will be more than happy to pick it up.

Also in Polestar's near-term plans are the mid-size battery electric Polestar 2, which will be positioned to compete with the Tesla Model 3. A single monthly payment will streamline related expenses like insurance and maintenance, and Polestar will offer pick-up/drop-off servicing for when it's time for that oil change or tire rotation.
