Nanded Municipal polls: Landslide victory for Congress despite BJP's all-out efforts

The 2017 elections outcome proved a huge setback to the Sena, NCP and AIMIM though some BJP leaders claimed the party which held two seats earlier (2012) had doubled its performance by capturing four seats. The counting of votes for the chosen ward, Ward Number 2, will be done twice, once through electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the next time through the VVPATs.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) the two parties contesting the election in alliance are likely to win a total of 10 seats, the exit polls said.

Mumbai: In Maharashtra's Nanded Waghala Municipal Corporation (NWMC) polls, the Congress led by former chief minister Ashok Chavan has emerged as the dominant party.

BJP candidate Jagruti Patil won the by-election in Ward no 116 in Bhandup.

BJP's Jagruti Patil defeated Shiv Sena's Meenakshi Patil in Bhandup, while Himali Kamble defeated Nationalist Congress Party's Dhananjay Gaikwad by margin of 4483 votes.

But the Congress' ally, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), failed to secure any leads, a State Election Commission (SEC) official said.

The Congress, with 41 members, controls the outgoing civic body.

Congress that is now ruling the civic body is seeking to retain it while the BJP, that has been thumping all other parties in most local body polls is seeking to seize power in Nanded.

The campaign for the polls witnessed a bitter war of words between the Congress, BJP and Shiv Sena. The Shiv Sena, that stood a distant second during the last elections, is fighting for relevance.

The area is state party chief Ashok Chavan's stronghold, and over 60% turnout was observed on Wednesday. Devendra Fadnavis has led the BJP's high pitched battle for the civic body election.

NCP, which had won 10 seats in the last elections, has so far not opened its account.
