The world number one's withdrawal from the Basel event will hand Federer - the current number two - an advantage in their race to finish the year as the top-ranked men's singles player.

The first set was dominated by Federer - the Swiss from the first attempt made the break and held on to his serve allowed Nadal to win only four goals. While Federer claimed victory at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Nadal prevailed at the French Open and U.S. Open.

Federer beat the Spaniard at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday to close the gap at the top of the ATP rankings.
