Mum jailed for refusing to get son vaccinated

Rebecca Bredow was last week sentenced for contempt of court almost a year after an Oakland County judge ordered her to have her nine-year-old son vaccinated.

Rebecca Bredow was released from jail on Wednesday after serving six days for failing to get her son vaccinated and was outraged her son received the jabs while she was behind bars.

The judge took away Bredow's primary custody of the child and said she would have to share guardianship with her ex-husband, James Horne, the AP reported.

Her crime? Not obeying a court order to vaccinate her child.

After failing to follow through with the promise, an Oakland County judge last week sentenced her to five days in prison for contempt of court. She thought she would be reunited with her son, but he remained with his father.

Bredow says she did this and that she and Horne had an agreement when their son was born to delay his vaccine schedule for three months.

7 Action News said Bredow and her ex-husband had agreed to vaccinate the child, but her views had since changed.

"It's been a rough few days to say the least", she added.

"It was the worst five days of my life, except for the fact that I just found out that he was vaccinated and I'm not going to get him back today", Bredow said.

Since the court initially ordered the immunization in 2016, Bredow has cited religious objections, reports the Detroit Free Press. She said she will do that.

Her attorney, Steven Vitale, claims the case is about more than just vaccinations.

"I would rather go to jail for standing up for what I believe in than vaccinating my child", Bredow said prior to sentencing.

"It's clear to me that you don't care about orders even if you agree to them, which you did".
