George Weah went from Ballon D'or to Presidency !

The victor of the Ballon d'Or Award for Best European Player in 1995 - George Weah, was elected President of Liberia. In 2005 George Wea again ran for president, but then remained second in the vote, after Surley.

A runoff election was widely expected with 20 candidates vying to replace Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first female president.

"As a longstanding friend, the United States applauds the people of Liberia for exercising their democratic right to vote in the historic presidential and legislative elections", said a statement from US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert. She led the country's recovery from a 14-year civil war and guided this West African country through the Ebola crisis that killed almost 5 000 people.

Following the backlash observer missions received after declaring Kenya's recent elections were fair, the two African observer missions fell short of giving a final verdict on the conduct of the polls.

Liberia, Africa's oldest modern republic, was founded by freed US slaves in 1847 but its last democratic power transfer dates back to 1943. According to global observers, the vote has gone smoothly, despite its late start in some counties.

Voters commended her leadership but said they were ready for change.

Responding to question from a journalist about how she felt after voting, she said: "I feel good and encourage all Liberians to vote right to move the country forward".
