To shed light on this epidemic and reduce the number of lives lost, the Goleta Police Department wants to draw public attention to National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 15th - 21st.

In 2015, nearly 2,000 teen drivers were involved in fatal traffic crashes, resulting in more than 2,000 deaths nationwide.

The award-winning program helps new drivers stay safe behind the wheel by capturing teen and parent interest with free hands-on driving clinics that pair newly licensed drivers with professional driving instructors. When teens begin driver's education, many states and localities now require parents to attend informational meetings. Wearing a seat belt is one of the simplest ways for teens to stay safe in a vehicle and it is required in all 50 States. According to data analyzed by NHTSA, teen drivers were 2.5 times more likely to engage in one or more potentially risky behaviors when driving with one teenage peer, when compared to driving alone. "Parents and caregivers are urged to talk about safe driving behaviors with their teens to address the most unsafe and deadly teen driving behaviors: alcohol, lack of seat belt use, distracted and drowsy driving, speeding and driving with passengers".

"Cell phone use continues to be a serious and often deadly distraction for all drivers, but it's a significant problem among young, inexperienced drivers", said Rhonda Craft, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. "They underestimate that, as well as a lot of adults do that too, but we need to get that message out there that your life could change in an instant".
