Fighter jets, navy ship data hacked

As first reported by technology news site ZDNet, Clarke said that the hacker, who the ASD gave the codename "Alf", was able to obtain around 30GB of data, including technical information on the $16 billion F-35 joint strike fighter, as well as other aircraft and naval vessels.

The ASD codenamed the hacker "Alf", a character played by Ray Meagher on Home and Away, Mr Clarke told the Australian Information Security Association conference.

Given the name "ATP ALF" - in reference to a +30 year character from the long-running Australian beachside TV program, "Home and Away" - the hacker had managed to sit inside the system of the contractor for months before detection in November 2016, and stole information about programs such as the $17 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter project, the C-130 Hercules transport plane and the $4 billion P-8 Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft project.

The company, which had only one IT person, was subcontracted four levels down from defence contracts.

Pyne said there were "upwards of 4000" businesses in Australia that worked in various defence industries.

"They were reaching the chief engineers emails, they were reading the finance person's emails, and they were reading a contracting person's emails", he said.

Mr Clarke said the information hacked on the new Navy ships included a diagram in which you could zoom in down to the captain's chair and see that it was one metre away from the navigation chair.

The admin password, to enter the company's web portal, was "admin" and the guest password was "guest".

The hackers used a tool called "China Chopper" which according to security experts is widely used by Chinese actors, and had gained access via an internet-facing server, he said.

The data was not classified but was commercially sensitive in nature, according to the Australian Cyber Security Centre.

A mystery hacker codenamed after a larrikin Australian soap opera character has been revealed as stealing sensitive, high-level information about a $1.1 trillion defence project created by an alliance including Australia, the U.S, United Kingdom and Canada.

"It is not classified and it is not unsafe in terms of the military", he said.

"The Government does not intend to discuss further the details of this cyber incident".

"It's not classified information".

Pyne said that while the government's public line is they know little about the alleged attacker - whom the ASD has dubbed APT Alf - they may have developed an understanding of who was behind the breach.

"We don't necessarily let the public, hackers, and criminal actors know what we know about what they're doing".

"It could be a state actor, [or] a non-state actor". "It could be someone who is working for another company".
