Emile Heskey explains why Liverpool missed out on van Dijk

FC Barcelona have been connected with moves for defenders for quite a while now.

According to a report from the Mirror, Barcelona are likely to engage into a bidding war in order to acquire Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

The Catalan outfit now rely heavily on the partnership of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti, with Javier Mascherano, who's preferred role is in midfield, first in line to step in for either of the aforementioned pair.

The Netherlands global was a target for the Reds during the summer, only for a rumoured £50m deal to break down because of an illegal approach.

Liverpool were heavily linked with a move to sign Van Dijk in the summer transfer window but couldn't get a deal over the line even though the stylish centre-half handed in a transfer request.

More news: Nadal set to rest

Football pundit Emile Heskey has stated that Liverpool failed to sign Virgil van Dijk during the summer because "took their eye off the ball".

Chelsea fell to a stock defeat away at Crystal Palace last weekend, losing further ground on Manchester City at the top of the table as the Blues' defence once again comes under question.

But van Dijk is not the only defender that could arrive to Barcelona, however, as Palmeiras star Yerry Mina will join the team in January.

The Sun says Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino certainly expects more bids for Liverpool target van Dijk and could decide to rebuild.
