Chelsea Handler Departs Netflix Talk Show To Pursue Political Activism

Liberal comedian Chelsea Handler announced Wednesday she is ending her Netflix talk show in order to devote time to becoming a "more knowledgeable and engaged citizen".

While Netflix and Handler's work together had appeared to be going well for the two, however, Handler has announced today that she and Netflix have made a decision to put an end to "Chelsea".

Handler said the presidential election and the dramatic events that followed "galvanized" her and persuaded her to scrap the show in favour of a renewed political activism. Motivated by a desire to raise her voice against the Trump administration (she doesn't mention Trump by name, but her intent is clear) she says she wants to travel the country, speak at colleges, and listen to students to "gain a better understanding of our political divide".

Handler said she's planning to travel the country and visit areas and people she doesn't know about to get a better understanding of the US political divide. "I have joined forces with EMILY's List to elect more women to public office, register people to vote, and campaign for candidates who are fighting for women's rights". Netflix also used the platform to promote many of their shows and movies often with the stars or creators appearing on the series.

New episodes of Handler's talk show Chelsea will continued to stream weekly until the end of 2017. The Hollywood Reporter indicated the show had been canceled. It launched in May 2016, with three episodes a week.

But the Chelsea host and Chelsea Does star isn't totally walking away from Netflix. In the same post on Twitter, Handler said she'll be working on a documentary with the streaming service, in which she'll talk to "people of different ethnicities, religions, and political philosophies".
