Boy Scouts to expand participation of girls

Allie Senn, Media Team member, Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. "I remember as a kid people would say, 'oh my, the program is going to go down.' But it only strengthened the program, as it did with Rotary when they allowed women in".

In the latest of high-profile moves to open up its membership, the Boy Scouts of America announced this week that it would allow girls and young women to participate in more of its programming. The larger Cub Scout packs will have the option to remain single gender or welcome both genders. The century-old program began accepting gay members and adult volunteers into their ranks recently, along with transgender boys in shifts that took entirely too long to become reality.

The Boy Scouts say the move is something families have asked about for years.

"They never reached out to let us know what was happening", she said.

Under the plan, Cub Scout dens will be single gender, either all-boys or all-girls, and a new program expected to start in 2019 would allow older girls to pursue a path toward the rank of Eagle Scout using the same curriculum as the Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts of America organization cited continued interest by families in signing up daughters as a primary reason for allowing girls to join Cub Scout packs in 2018, but left the decision of creating all-girl, all-boy or integrated packs to the local leaders in the first approach to welcoming girls to the program. Girl Scouts provides a safe and inclusive environment that has been proven over the years, she said. Likewise, Girl Scout Gold Award recipients rate their general success significantly higher than that of their peers.

The Boy Scouts of San Diego did not respond to multiple 10News requests for an interview.

That's the word from Ruth Strawser, director of brand and strategy for the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana Michiana.

He added that he hopes the organization will remove the word "Boy" from its name, and simply be called "Scouts of America".

When it comes to programming, she said, "You can't just have girls be an afterthought".

Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming (GSMW) CEO, Sally J. Leep believes the decision by Boy Scouts of America is unfortunate and a disservice to girls.

The rank of Eagle Scout is a prestigious and widely recognized achievement, one that can have longterm benefits in academic, professional and even military spheres.

However, Hulet said she is unconcerned with how to manage co-ed groups in the future if the BSA decides to meld the two genders together for the Boy Scouts program. Both the Girl Scout Promise and the Boy Scout Oath vow to serve God and country and to help people at all times; both offer badges for entrepreneurship, cooking and camping.

"We'll make sure those environments are protected", he said.

Co-ed programs through the Boy Scouts organization are nothing new, he said.

"The young women who are part of the troop do all the hikes, they are deserving of the chance to earn the same rank advancements and deserving of a chance to stand in front of everyone and receive the Eagle", Stone said.

Wilcox said this is their membership season which makes it easier for girls to join during this time.

"We believe there is a certain power in every girl", she said.

GSUSA said 90% of female astronauts, 80% of female tech leaders, 75% of the current female senators, and all female US Secretaries of State were girl scouts. "Because you're not addressing the developmental needs of the boys by themselves as a group".
