Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik apologises for Weinstein comments

Big Bang Theory's Mayim Bialik apologises for Weinstein comments

She later added that nothing "excuses men for assaulting or abusing women" and women should be able to wear whatever they want and act however they want.

"God forbid I would blame a woman for her assault based on her clothing or behavior", she wrote on Twitter.

"What you wear and how you behave does not provide any protection from assault, nor does the way you dress or act in any way make you responsible for being assaulted: you are never responsible for being assaulted".

Actress Martha Plimpton was so moved as to send the New York Times this polite yet searing critique: "With all respect to Mayim Bialik on her considerable accomplishments, the positioning of sexual assault and harassment in the entertainment industry as a special club for pretty girls is offensive".

One of Bialik's minority of early defenders commented, "Mayim that was a very brilliant and powerful piece!"

He later told Variety: "When I said I felt sad for Harvey Weinstein I thought it was clear the meaning was because he is a sad, sick man". In the piece, Bialik says she has rarely experienced sexual harassment in the workplace in part because she doesn't flash her sexuality and try to be a "perfect ten".

Bialik said in her op-ed that under the influence of her immigrant Jewish parents, she has long made decisions that she considers "self-protecting and wise". This time, she is hoping that the people will forgive her.

These reasons are why the UCLA PhD said she was "honored" to depict her Big Bang character Amy Farrah Fowler.

'Anyone who knows me and my feminism knows that's absurd and not at all what this piece was about. "I really do regret that this became what it became because literally I was trying to speak about a very specific experience I've had in a very specific industry". During a live chat with the New York Times on Monday, she defended herself fully, saying she was not victim blaming or "passing judgment" on women who don't dress as modestly as she does. We can see that, sure, she was only talking about her own experience and "not about assault and rape in general".

"I still love you, but as a child molestation survivor with PTSD I cannot take your words for any other way than the way they made me feel ... disappointed", wrote one woman.

And, maybe they would have suggested some revisions she could have made before hitting send to transmit her piece to the New York Times.
