Amazon Alexa devices can finally tell voices apart

The solution, for these mostly blind devices, has been voice recognition, first seen on the Google Home, and today available on Amazon's Echo range of smart speakers. The original Echo was first made available in late 2014 for select Amazon Prime subscribers, and that means the Alexa AI has been learning new tricks and features for almost three years. You'll have to repeat ten sentences over to train Alexa that it's your voice.

Via the Amazon Alexa app housemates can now set up voice recognition using the Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Show. Once created, personalized results can be delivered through any Alexa-enabled device, including third-party ones that use the Alexa Voice Service.

It's the latest development in the back-and-forth battle between Alexa and the Google Assistant, each one working to one-up the other with new features as they fight to earn a place in your home.

In addition to Flash Briefing, Alexa's ability to distinguish different voices will also creep into shopping, Amazon Music (family plan only), and Alexa to Alexa calling. For instance, if I tell Alexa simply to "play music", she'll start playing songs based on my preferences. If my roommate asks, she'll play different songs that are better-suited to his tastes.

This mystery device will supposedly include numerous same features the Show already has (including YouTube playback) while also acting as a smart home hub for various smart home devices.
