United Nations unanimously backs new sanctions on North Korea

Washington and its allies have said there is a growing urgency for China, North Korea's top ally and trading partner, to apply more pressure on its already isolated neighbor to get it to back down on its nuclear weapons and missiles programs.

President Trump on Tuesday lauded the United Nations Security Council for unanimously approving new sanctions against North Korea, but he questioned whether they will have "any impact" on its nuclear program.

The resolution fell short of measures sought by the Trump administration and opposed by Russian Federation and China to ban all oil imports, instead capping Pyongyang's imports of crude oil at the level of the last 12 months and limiting the imports of refined petroleum products to 2 million barrels per year.

"The DPRK is ready and willing to use any form of ultimate means", Pyongyang said in a statement, according to CNN.

His comments come after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a US-draft resolution imposing new sanctions on North Korea.

However, China's official Xinhua news agency said in a commentary that the Trump administration was making a mistake by rejecting diplomatic engagement with the North.

How advanced is North Korea's nuclear programme? Still, North Korea rejected the measure, and Han said Washington "fabricated the most vicious sanction resolution", according to wire reports.

But U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday said the U.S. should be prepared to act alone, in a "supercharged" manner, to put maximum pressure on North Korea.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Ricardo Luna said the move was strongly rooted in global law as reflected by new United Nations sanctions against North Korea passed on Monday.

However, North Korea did not issue a response immediately after the adoption of the latest resolution.

"This will cut deep", U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said on the new resolution, pointing out it will hit Pyongyang's ability to fuel and fund its nuclear and missile programs and will reduce by nearly 50 percent its supply of gas, diesel and heavy fuel oil.

"New Zealand, once again, joins the worldwide community in calling on North Korea to abide by its global obligations and turn away from its current course".

What happened next? On 3 September, North Korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb that could be miniaturised and loaded on a long-range missile. The names of a few North Korean officials have also been added to UN's blacklist, which results in the freezing of their assets overseas and a worldwide travel ban.

It also bans joint ventures with North Korean entities, except for non-commercial public utility infrastructure projects not generating profits, and calls for the inspection of vessels on the high seas, if there are reasonable grounds to believe the cargo of such vessels is prohibited items.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi again called for talks "sooner rather than later".
