United Nations backs new sanctions on North Korea

North Korea remained defiant over new United Nations sanctions imposed for its latest nuclear test, vowing on Wednesday to redouble efforts to fight off what it said was the threat of a USA invasion.

Defence officials said the unit could conduct cross-border raids with retooled helicopters and transport planes that could penetrate North Korea at night.

"The EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini made the remarks on Tuesday in her report on the North's sixth nuclear test and global responses during a plenary session of the European Parliament in France".

While US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said the United States does not seek leadership change in North Korea, and the South Koreans say the new military tactics are meant to offset the North Korean threat, the capabilities they are building could be used pre-emptively.

It prompted the United Nations Security Council to adopt its eighth set of sanctions on North Korea, but previous resolutions have done little to halt Pyongyang's weapons ambitions. The new measures include limiting North Korea's imports of petroleum products and banning textile exports.

Chinese officials have privately expressed fears that an oil embargo could risk causing massive instability in its neighbor.

Intelligence agencies and cybersecurity experts have also linked North Korea to WannaCry, the biggest cyberattack the world has ever seen.

Why is North Korea "begging for war"?

"This large explosive yield is also quite close to what 38 North had previously determined to be the maximum estimated containable yield for the Punggye-ri test site", said 38 North. "It remains on the table at the Security Council and we will insist on it being considered". Late Sunday, after a series of closed meetings, a revised draft emerged, setting a cap on oil exports to North Korea but not blocking them altogether.

Last week, US President Donald Trump agreed to lift payload limits under a decades-old treaty, allowing South Korea to build more powerful ballistic missiles. "This ban will eventually starve the regime of an additional $500 million or more in annual revenues", Haley said.

It is a hard balancing act, pitting Moon's preference for a diplomatic solution against his nation's need to answer an existential question: How can a country without nuclear weapons deter a dictator who has them?

Even if China and Russian Federation do fully enforce the latest sanctions, there's still considerable doubt about whether the stranglehold will force Kim to rethink the development of North Korea's nuclear weapons. "We've been played by the Kims for years", Republican Representative Ted Poe said, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his predecessors.
