'Textbook example of ethnic cleansing' in Myanmar

'Textbook example of ethnic cleansing' in Myanmar

"We think the global community should support the efforts of Myanmar in safeguarding the stability of its national development".

Fresh violence erupted in Rakhine state more than two weeks ago when security forces launched an operation against the Rohingya community.

The White House said on Monday the violent displacement of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar showed the country's security forces were not protecting civilians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who concluded his three-day visit to Myanmar on Thursday, expressed solidarity with the government there against the "extremist violence" in the Rakhine state.

Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama said the suffering of Rohingya Muslims fleeing violence in Myanmar would have inspired Buddha to help.

He said the influx of refugees in the past month took the total number of Rohingya in Bangladesh to more than 700,000.

Rohingyas are not recognised by Myanmar as its citizens and are called Bengali by them and Leaders of countries with majority Muslim populations including Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh have led efforts to increase pressure on the Myanmar government.

Over the weekend, the country's apex Muslim umbrella body, the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, also called the development in Myanmar "crimes against humanity".

"Because Myanmar has refused access to human rights investigators, the current situation can not yet be fully assessed, but the situation seems a textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Troops are targeting crossing points used by the refugees to escape into Bangladesh, Amnesty International said.

Yanghee Lee, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Myanmar, said Friday that at least 1,000 people had been killed in the violence, though she said that figure is "very likely an underestimate".

The UN official also came down heavily on the Myanmar government, saying that the situation there is a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

"In addition, India is party to major global human rights instruments, such as worldwide Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Convention on the Rights of the Child", it said.

"We have received multiple reports and satellite imagery of security forces and local militia burning Rohingya villages, and consistent accounts of extrajudicial killings, including shooting fleeing civilians", Zeid said.

He becomes the latest Nobel laureate to speak out against the conflict after Archbishop Desmond Tutu broke his vow of silence to urge Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same. "It is not acceptable", he said, adding Dhaka was seeking a peaceful solution, not a "war" against Myanmar.
