Suu Kyi must end hands-off approach to Rohingya; democracy is a stake

The Burmese military has burned down villages in northern Rakhine state, where the Rohingya live, and committed mass killings along the way, according to Matthew Smith, a founder of the human rights group Fortify Rights.

The 1.1-million strong Rohingya people have suffered many years of discrimination in Myanmar, where they are denied citizenship.

Murphy said the USA ultimately wants Rohingya to be able to return to their homes in northern Rakhine state.

Naypyidaw: A Buddhist mob in Myanmar threw petrol bombs in a bid to block a boat carrying aid for Rohingya Muslims in conflict-hit Rakhine state before police fired warning shots to disperse them, a media report said.

She proposed that Myanmar unconditionally stop the practice of "ethnic cleansing" in Rakhine immediately and forever and the UN Secretary-General immediately send a fact-finding mission to Myanmar.

He acknowledged that the USA and others don't have access to all the facts on the ground in Rakhine and said Washington is pushing Myanmar to end its ban on media access to the region.

He said the USA welcomed Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi's decision to speak publicly about the problem this week.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has been under fire over her tepid response to the plight of the Rohingya, has skipped the annual gathering of world leaders.

Since the middle of August, 422,000 Rohingya people have arrived in Bangladesh but both the Bangladeshi authorities and foreign aid organisations are finding it hard to help them.

Violence against the Rohingya in Rakhine, the poorest state of Myanmar, has escalated in recent weeks after some of the Myanmar Army posts came under attack by an allegedly insurgent group.

He urged the "better angels" of the Myanmar people to find empathy for the Rohingya.

"I think instead of using this emotive term as it is "highly charged", it is better just to say Muslims". Suu Kyi, who serves as state counsellor and foreign minister, has skipped the gathering. Although Suu Kyi claimed that there haven't been further "clearing operations" since September 5, satellite images of burning villages flatly contradict that claim.

Britain's junior foreign minister Mark Field has said the United Kingdom armed forces provided vocational courses, focused on language training, governance, accountability, ethics, human rights and worldwide law to the Myanmar military.

Suu Kyi did not travel to NY for the United Nations meetings, but in a speech this week - her first on the crisis - she defend her country's actions and called for the Rohingya to return.
