Stevie Wonder takes both knees 'for America' after President Trump's National Football League remarks

Wonder, performing at the Global Citizens Festival, knelt down on both knees right before his performance to take a moment to pray for world leaders and America.

Hours earlier on Twitter, the president rescinded National Basketball Association star Stephen Curry's invitation to the White House after Curry revealed he would not be accepting it.

At his rally Friday, Trump attacked a familiar litany of enemies, including North Korea and Hillary Clinton, and rounding on the National Football League, also questioned rule changes that penalise the most damaging hits in the game, after a series of players were left with serious brain injuries.

Wonder also spoke out in April this year while accepting the "Key of Life" award in Los Angeles, saying when people hate each other over their sexual preference, religion or skin color it is both ignorant and stupid. "We must take care of each other, and this planet. If we don't, we could lose the ultimate video game of life", Wonder said, referencing an exchange of insults between Trump and Korea's Kim Jong Un. "Weapons are real and rhetoric is unsafe". "Whether it be from a superpower in North America or a superpower in North Korea". The musician then went on to tell his "global brothers and sisters" that he hadn't come here to preach, but just to tell them everyone's spirits "must be in the right place all the time".

Wonder asked the crowd to "stand down bigotry" and "condemn sexism".

During Wonder's set, the singer teamed with fellow Global Citizen performer Pharrell Williams for a trio of songs, including "Happy", "Superstition" and Daft Punk's "Get Lucky", which Wonder previously performed alongside Williams and the French duo at the 2014 Grammys.
