South Korea seeks stronger weapons amid rising tensions with North

Vladimir Putin, speaking at a press conference following a BRICS meeting in Xiamen in China, struck a discord with Washington's approach to the North Korea crisis when he criticized the pursuit of further sanctions as useless and denounced military threats against the regime of Kim Jong-Un as risky.

North Korea says it detonated a hydrogen bomb in its sixth nuclear test on Sunday.

Nikki Haley, the United States ambassador to the UN, said on Monday that North Korea's leadership is "begging for war" as she called on the body's Security Council to impose tougher measures against the country following its most powerful nuclear test to date.

Both called for further sanctions on North Korea over its rapidly advancing nuclear weapons and missile programmes, including an oil shipment embargo.

Putin met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday and plans to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday.

"Russia condemns this action from North Korea". The aim of denuclearizing North Korea is mostly out of reach, which is tough to admit when America has spent decades warning of the consequences of Pyongyang's program.

Dozens of people were injured in clashes between South Korean protesters and police Thursday as the US military added more launchers to the high-tech missile-defense system it installed in a southern town to better cope with North Korean threats.

In an early morning tweet Tuesday, Trump said, "I am allowing Japan & South Korea to buy a substantially increased amount of highly sophisticated military equipment from the United States".

China and Russian Federation have both since distanced themselves from that approach.

Beijing says the system's powerful radars will be able to monitor flights and missile launches deep inside north-eastern China.

"There's no other path apart from a peaceful one".

The two leaders reportedly agreed that North Korea's nuclear and missile programs pose a serious threat.

The Russian president also slammed the "useless" sanctions imposed on North Korea, and called the U.S.

The draft United Nations resolution also calls for a freeze on the assets of North Korea's national airline, Air Koryo, which flies to Beijing and other Chinese cities, and to Vladivostok in Russian Federation.

Asked whether he was considering a military response to North Korea, Trump said: "Certainly, that's not our first choice, but we will see what happens".

He said: "Without political and diplomatic tools, it is impossible to make headway in the current situation; to be more precise, it is impossible at all".

North Korea accused South Korea and Japan of "dirty politics" for what it said was the highjacking a meeting meant to be about economic development.

He has also publicly weighed scrapping a U.S. trade deal with South Korea in a bid to fulfill promises he made during the election campaign, and threatened to make South Korea pay for THAAD, even though it was Washington pushing for the system's deployment.
