Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand will co-sponsor Bernie Sanders' Medicare-for-all bill

Senator Elizabeth Warren is signing on to Bernie Sanders' "Medicare For All" single-payer health care plan. Most Senate Democrats are not expected to support his bill.

"Right now, our health care system is incredibly complex, fragmented, and stressful".

The plan, entitled "Medicare for All", would expand the federal health care program Medicare, which now covers disabled Americans and citizens age 65 and older, to all Americans.

Sanders' visit to the tri-annual convention of the California Nurses Association-National Nurses Organizing Committee on September 22 in San Francisco comes about a week after the introduction of his Medicare-for-all legislation, which has drawn support from the likes of Sens. "Everything should be on the table - and that's why I'm co-sponsoring Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All bill that will be introduced later this month", she wrote in a letter to supporters Thursday. Republicans remain passionately opposed.

Sanders made single payer a driving force of his campaign for president past year, and is now keeping up the push.

But popular support, Warren concludes, is on the side of single payer. She has long expressed openness to the idea - though she questioned its political efficacy during her 2012 race. "Now it's time for the next step". "Everyone is covered. Nobody goes broke paying a medical bill". A new survey of US physicians shows 42 percent "strongly" favor single-payer and another 14 percent "somewhat" so, according to Forbes (Aug. 13).

"Health care should be a right for every single American, not a privilege reserved for the healthy and the wealthy".

Her lengthy message, however, does include some of the ambiguity that has colored her past statements on single payer.

Warren is the second Democratic senator to co-sponsor Sanders' as-yet-unseen bill, following California's junior senator, Kamala Harris. "Everything should be on the table", she says, as policymakers figure out how to ensure all Americans get high-quality, low-priced health care - and that's why she's backing Sanders' bill. Fortunately, single-payer Medicare-for-all would both greatly cut costs and markedly increase Obamacare's improved coverage, impossible until health insurance companies lose control.
