Putin warns of global catastrophe over proposed sanctions on N'Korea

Russian president Vladimir Putin is confident that there will be no conflict with the use of weapons of mass destruction in North-East Asia, he said at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok.

That test, along with a series of missile launches, showed Pyongyang was close to achieving its goal of developing a powerful nuclear weapon that could reach the United States.

After the meeting, Abe and Moon issued a statement saying "now is the time to further increase sanctions and pressures against the North as much as possible rather than seeking dialogue " n.

North Korea's minister of external economic relations, who is at the forum, said his country will "respond to barbaric attempts to exert pressure by the USA by our strong countermeasures", according to the Russian state-run news agency Tass.

The proposed measures, which are set to be discussed on Monday, also include a ban on the country exporting textiles and the hiring of North Korean workers overseas.

It is not clear at this point, whether China supports the resolution but President Putin's comments do suggest that such resolution is unlikely to get passed on Monday.

Meanwhile, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres warned the U.S. and North Korea that "confrontational rhetoric may lead to unintended consequences" and stressed the nuclear crisis must be solved diplomatically.

Russian President Vladimir Putin urged North Korea to learn from the fall of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, warning that it could suffer a similar fate unless it tones down its nuclear program, CNN reported. For the Trump administration, honest Russian help with North Korea would be welcome, but that's not what it is seeing. By comparison, China provides it with about 520,000 tonnes of crude a year, according to industry sources.

Their conversation came days after North Korea's latest — and most powerful — nuclear test.

More news: Most South Koreans doubt the North will start a war

The 29-nation USA -led alliance expressed full solidarity with Japan and South Korea, North Korea's neighbors.

Trump and British Prime Minister Theresa May agreed in a telephone call on Tuesday that China must do more to persuade North Korea to cease its missile tests, a spokesman for May said. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un then called the launch a "meaningful prelude" to containing the U.S. Pacific island territory of Guam and called for his military to conduct more ballistic missile launches targeting the Pacific Ocean.

Its sixth nuclear test on Sunday prompted the United States to speak about a "military response" and South Korea to conduct major military exercises.

It will also "take into account the level of sanctions by the worldwide community, public sentiment, improvement of inter-Korean relations and among others", Lee added.

The clash was ignited by the deployment of a USA missile defense system aimed at countering possible attacks from North Korea.

The Trump administration says the United Nations needs to tighten economic sanctions to pressure North Korea to change its behavior and start talking.

- South Korea calls for tougher United Nations sanctions.

On April 26, two mobile launchers and other THAAD elements were delivered in the middle of night to the former golf course at Soseong-ri village in Seongju county, North Gyeongsang province. While a "stronger South Korea-US alliance" has been offered as a practical reason, it doesn't benefit us at all in terms of addressing the nuclear issue.

Asian stocks fell on Wednesday after a slide on Wall Street overnight while the dollar was on the defensive with Korean tension showing few signs of abating.
