North Korea hackers 'suspected of stealing bitcoins'

Japan backed a U.S. push for the United Nations Security Council to vote today on fresh sanctions against North Korea, saying that Kim Jong Un's nuclear programme poses the most serious threat since World War II.

The North's Foreign Ministry issued a statement Monday saying it is watching the United States' moves closely and threatened it is "ready and willing" to respond with measures of its own.

Japan and South Korea said after the passage of the USA -drafted Security Council resolution they were prepared to apply more pressure if Pyongyang refused to end its aggressive development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles.

A proposed asset freeze and a travel ban on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un were dropped.

It was the ninth sanctions resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-member council since 2006 over North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear programs.

A South Korean presidential office spokesman said on Tuesday: "North Korea needs to realise that a reckless challenge against global peace will only bring about even stronger sanctions against them".

Among other concessions the new text is slightly softer when it comes to the situation of North Korean guest workers and the inspection by force of ships suspected of carrying cargo prohibited by the UN.

Haley said the resolution aimed to hit "North Korea's ability to fuel and fund its weapons program".

30 November 2016: United Nations targeted North Korea's valuable coal trade with China, slashing exports by about 60% under a new sales cap. The FBI is also examining North Korea's link to the theft of $81 million through the New York Fed a year ago, Bloomberg Markets reported last month.

NIKKI HALEY: Today we are saying the world will never accept a nuclear-armed North Korea.

Pyongyang warned the United States on Monday that it would pay a "due price" for spearheading efforts on U.N. sanctions.

Britain's U.N. ambassador, Matthew Rycroft, told reporters who questioned the watering down of the initial US text that "there is a significant prize in keeping the whole of the Security Council united".

China and Russian Federation had called for a resolution focused on a political solution to the escalating crisis over North Koreas nuclear program. But they are concerned about the nuclear and missile tests.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi again called for talks "sooner rather than later".

FireEye says it has identified three attacks against South Korean cryptocurrency exchanges that took place between May and July, all of them linked to North Korean hackers.

There was new political language in the resolution urging "further work to reduce tensions so as to advance the prospects for a comprehensive settlement". It retains language reaffirming support for long-stalled six-party talks with that goal involving North Korea, the U.S., Russia, China, Japan and South Korea.

The NSCC also said the xenon traces detected had no impact on South Korea's environment and population.
