No pole but Red Bull confident of Singapore win

No pole but Red Bull confident of Singapore win

Hamilton is pinning his hopes of moving up the field on the start, the pitstops and the potential of a safety auto which has been deployed at every race in Singapore so far.

From the start, which was in wet conditions, Vettel leant across to block a move from second place Max Verstappen, who was then forced into the very fast starting Kimi Raikkonen and both Ferrari drivers and the Dutchman collided, resulting in retirements all-round. We're not in the race and that's a pity, we can't show the pace we have.

Ricciardo, who was targeting a dominant weekend for Red Bull after his Friday form, was disappointed to qualify only third with a 1:39.840.

Red Bull Racing's pace from practice did not carry over to the race, and while Daniel Ricciardo looked set to be one of the favouries for the race win in Singapore, only managed to finish in second place, four seconds down on Hamilton despite a late Safety Car. "Who could have known that would happen?"

"I think there was damage on the vehicle already", he said of his second incident.

"I have an idea, if we were to do the race again and set the auto up different, something we did on the vehicle would have helped us if we went the other way for how the conditions are. But I'm sure there'll be more opportunities". At times I thought Ricciardo could have taken Lewis on the inside but Lewis was just too good this race.

A replay showed fluid streaming out of Vettel's damaged sidepod after Turn 1 and it is likely it caused him to lose the rear of his auto and hammer his Ferrari against the concrete wall. "It gave me time to see what would happen".

When asked after the incident if he felt the race should have been started under the Safety Car, Vettel replied: "I don't know".

But Hamilton dodged the pile-up and he progressed from fifth on the grid to first, ahead of Ricciardo, as the race finally restarted after a safety auto.

Lost amid the first-corner mayhem was a dazzling start by Fernando Alonso, who swept past on the outside of Nico Hulkenberg and Valtteri Bottas, only to be scuttled by Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari. I saw Max and then the next thing I see is Max and Kimi hitting me somewhere. The safety auto was also deployed on lap 11 when Toro Rosso's Daniil Kvyat crashed into the barriers.
