New Suzuki Swift Sport to be lighter and torquier

The Japanese brand debuted its second-generation Swift Sport at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, which for the first time is equipped with a turbochaged engine.

The Suzuki Swift Sport has been one of the most interesting hot hatches of the last decade, well at least outside the United States.

Thanks to the new Swift's HEARTECT platform, the 2018 Swift Sport has a kerb weight of just 970kg.

Putting power through that 'box is the 1.4-litre boosted four-pot engine, though here it produces 103kW and 230Nm. The torque-to-weight ratio of the new Swift Sport is approximately 4.2 kg/ Nm.

"We know that our customers value a dynamic driving experience above everything else, so for the third-generation Swift Sport our development concept was "ultimate driving excitement", Koboro says. It drives a six-speed manual transmission that sends power to the front wheels only.

As for the design, we've already seen the more aggressive body compared with the regular Swift.

Exterior updates include a new front bumper with wider air intakes and a rear bumper with twin exhaust pipes within a blacked-out diffuser, as well as black A-pillars and larger 17-inch alloy wheels. The euro-spec Swift Sport gets a ground clearance of 120mm the same as the standard variant. The wheelbase and width have also increased by 20mm and 40mm respectively.

Inside it's a practical yet sporty place to be, with red highlights in every corner, a sports steering wheel for the driver, special red gauges, and mildly bolstered sports seats. Depending on the configuration, the advanced safety features of the new Swift Sport introduce forward detection system, dual sensor brake support, lane departure warning, weaving alert function, high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, Radar Brake Support, emergency stop signal, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring system, TECT impact-absorbing body, six SRS airbags and pedestrian injury mitigation body.
