Nebraska loses 21-17 at home to Northern Illinois

Maybe the NU had written off Northern Illinois before the 11 a.m. game had even started. It didn't come as a shock to many fans across the country given the fact the Huskies have turned similar paydays to Northwestern, Iowa and Purdue into victories in recent seasons.

Combined with last week's 42-35 loss at OR, the Huskers have trailed at halftime in their last two games by the total score of 56-14.

Nebraska's athletic director voiced his frustration after the Cornhuskers lost to Northern Illinois on Saturday.

The Huskers kept fighting, and Lee connected with JD Spielman at the 2-yard line setting up a quarterback sneak for Lee a couple of plays later.

That's not the way to get a win at home.

"We have to stick together", Riley said. "We could never recover from giving them two touchdowns early".

"When we talk about this big separation between Power Five and Group of Five — I should say autonomous five and non-autonomous five — certainly the money pouring in is probably different. It's just really, really disappointing".

Northern Illinois' defense had a once-in-a-lifetime first quarter, returning two interceptions for touchdowns. One alum expressed his displeasure on social media. That inconsistency Riley mentioned was evident for all to see against Northern Illinois. He finished the game with 25completions on 47 passing attempts, throwing for 299 yards.

The next disaster for Nebraska was result of another pick 6 thrown by Lee.

Lee, the transfer from Tulane, was anointed as the starter after spring practice. De'Mornay Pierson-El had eight receptions for 101 yards while Stanley Morgan Jr. had six catches for 94.

After the two pick-sixes Nebraska lulled for a while longer. "They run a lot of bubbles, so something just told me to jump it and I just jumped it", Lurry said. "That was a tough way to start. I think we all have good players". "We couldn't get out of the hole".

Later in the quarter, Jawuan Johnson picked off another Lee pass and scampered 25 yards into the end zone to give the Huskies a 14-0 lead with 1:13 left in the quarter.

Northern Illinois outgained the Panthers 499-187 one week after kicker Christian Hagan's potential game-tying 39-yard field-goal attempt hit the crossbar in the waning seconds of the season opener. Nebraska was also fortunate that a replay review overturned a Lee fumble that was returned deep into Husker territory.

After Nebraska took its only lead of the game with 11:14 left in the game on a one-yard dive by quarterback Tanner Lee to cap a 17-0 run by the Huskers in the second half, the Huskie offense responded. Northern Illinois sophomore quarterback Daniel Santacaterina was 15 of 22 for 128 yards.

On the first drive of the game, NU drove down the field looking to score. A pair of freshman, Patrick O'Brien and Tristan Gebbia, sit behind Lee on the depth chart. Lee made a bunch of throws under duress on Saturday.

The Huskers' offense continued to shoot itself in the foot, giving up a combined 35 yards on four offensive penalties.

"We had a great game plan for this week, watching a lot of film on them", Lurry said. We didn't run the ball consistently.
