National Party MP Jian Yang refutes 'Chinese spy' claim

A China-born MP for New Zealand's ruling party has denied being a spy after it emerged that he had spent years studying and teaching in universities with links to Chinese intelligence services.

"I say that because a Labour source leaked knowledge of Mr Yang's background to me, unaware that I already knew", says Mr Peters.

Dr Yang was a student at the People's Liberation Army Air Force Engineering College and the Luoyang language institute, run by the agency responsible for Chinese spying.

To have taught at the Air Force Engineering College, Yang would have nearly certainly been an officer in Chinese military intelligence and a member of the Communist Party, Newsroom reported.

A joint investigation by Newsroom and Hong Kong's Financial Times claims New Zealand's Security Intelligence Service has investigated the Chinese-born MP, including interviewing a person about him previous year.

But National's Jian Yang says to him they were just students collecting information by monitoring the communications of other countries.

"I challenge those who are propagating these defamatory statements to front up and prove them", he said.

"This is a smear campaign by nameless people who are out to damage me and the National Party 10 days from an election, just because I am Chinese".

"This is a New Zealand citizen".

He said he had always been aware of Yang's background and his military training for a long while. He migrated to New Zealand to teach global relations in the politics department at the University of Auckland. The newspaper said the school specialised in training both "openly acknowledged military intelligence officers and "secret line" deep cover agents".

"I also understand it was quite well known in the Chinese community as well".

"As my Chinese source told me of Mr Yang in 2011 - in China, once a spy always a spy".

Dr Yang said he had not had any involvement with the Communist Party since leaving China in 1994.

Despite this, Yang said many Chinese were choosing to move to New Zealand thanks to its "second-to-none environment, democratic political system, equal economic opportunities and stable society".
