N.Korea warns United States over sanctions push

The sanctions come days after a nuclear test by North Korea.

"If it agrees to stop its nuclear program, it can reclaim its future". If it proves it can live in peace, the world will live in peace with it, ' she added.

The initial draft resolution called for a full oil embargo, the blacklisting of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, and several other measures to address the growing threat.

China and Russian Federation, which joined with the United States to impose penalties against North Korea, said sanctions will only go so far in forcing Kim's government to curb its weapons and called for a diplomatic solution.

In an attempt to punish North Korea for its latest nuclear test, the UN Security Council approved new sanctions, targeting the country's textile industry and limiting its import of crude oil.

The sanctions also ban all textile exports and prohibit all countries from authorizing new work permits for North Korean workers, both of which are sources of hard currency for the regime.

"We are not looking for war", US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley said. An Aug. 5 United Nations resolution banned North Korean exports of coal.

However, questions remain as to whether this latest resolution, already the ninth of its kind on the regime, will be enough to force North Korea back to the table for talks, the objective of the resolution in the first place.

China tested antimissile systems and performed exercises to prepare for a "surprise attack" from North Korea, indicating newfound alarm among the military about the crisis.

Due to opposition, a proposed asset freeze and a complete travel ban on dictator Kim Jong-un were dropped.

DPRK stands for North Korea's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. In addition to testing a collection of new missiles, including an intercontinental ballistic missile that can reach the US, the North has also tested a suspected staged thermonuclear bomb. He said that North Korea will respond by causing the greatest pain to United States in its history. China, supplies most of North Korea's crude oil.

While his ambassador to the United Nations and Treasury Secretary both hailed the sanctions as "historic", U.S. President Donald Trump called the development "not a big deal", Bloomberg reports.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (SHIN'-zoh AH'-bay) said Tuesday in Tokyo that he highly appreciates what he called "a remarkably tough sanctions resolution".
