N Korea hit with new United Nations sanctions over nuclear test

A statement from North Korea's foreign ministry published on the state-controlled KCNA news agency threatened the USA should the sanctions be approved.

Susan Thornton, the acting top US diplomat for East Asia, noted that last month the United States rolled out new sanctions targeting Russian and Chinese individuals and entities. "Those sanctions are nothing compared to ultimately what will have to happen".

The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously on Monday evening to increase sanctions against North Korea, albeit a resolution that was greatly watered down from that desired by the United States.

It was the ninth sanctions resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-member Council since 2006 over North Korea's ballistic missile and nuclear programmes.

The draft also included a freeze of all foreign financial assets of the government and its leader, as well as bans that would keep countries from hiring North Korean workers or importing textiles from the isolated regime.

In recent weeks, North Korea had threatened the United States over the sanctions.

China, North Korea's top trading partner, is not eager to endorse sanctions that could undermine Pyongyang stability and cause millions of refugees to cross its border.

She said that these sanctions are by far the "strictest" sanctions to be imposed on North Korea but they can only achieve what they set out to do if all countries follow these sanctions aggressively.

The measures restrict oil imports and ban textile exports, and were approved after North Korea's sixth and largest nuclear test earlier this month. It was changed, partly due to the positions taken by Russian Federation and China.

"Today we are saying the world will never accept a nuclear armed North Korea", she said.

Ethiopia's ambassador to the United Nations, the current Security Council president, confirmed Sunday that a Security Council vote would take place Monday. "If North Korea continues its risky path, we will continue with further pressure", she said.

An unnamed North Korean foreign ministry spokesman claimed on Monday the U.S. was "going frantic to fabricate the harshest ever "sanctions resolution" by manipulating the United Nations Security Council".

Stoltenberg however declined to clarify NATO's position on North Korea's continued provocation, and instead stressed the need for a conflict-free resolution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

China supplies most of North Korea's crude.

The original United States proposal for the sanctions would have placed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on an global blacklist and implemented a full ban on selling oil to his regime.
