Mukul Roy to resign from TMC working committee today

Roy, whose relationship with the leadership has been strained of late, said he would give an explanation on why he was leaving the party and why he was "forced to do so" after Durga Puja.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mukul Roy dropped a political bombshell on Monday as he announced his decision to quit as member of Parliament from the Rajya Sabha, according to several media reports.

After being imposed with the allegations of being a traitor, the party vice-president had only option left with him and that was of resigning from the post.

The Trinamool Congress is expected to hold a press conference at 1 pm today. He wa absent from the event and was also unavailable for the comments as he was busy in the Durga Puja magazine unveiling with the name of Jago Bangla on September 19.

Roy, one of the founding members of the Trinamool, said he has already sent in his resignation from the party working committee. TMC was set to suspend Roy after he fell out of favour with TMC chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee.

Roy had visited Delhi last week and met a few senior BJP leaders in the national capital. "I will reveal the reasons after the Durga Pujas", Roy said addressing journalists.

"I'm a party working committee member and a Rajya Sabha member elected on the party symbol". With a heavy heart today, I have made a decision to separate myself from the party.

Roy was recently removed as the TMC vice-president after the party chose to restructure its committee.

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party President Dilip Ghosh had said the party was open to Roy joining.

For quite sometime rumours were doing rounds that he has been in close touch with the BJP's top leadership and is likely to join the party.
