Millions of Florida Homes and Businesses Still Don't Have Power

Irma has caused as yet untold damage from wind and storm surges since making landfall in southern Florida, following hot on the heels of Hurricane Harvey's impact on Houston.

"According to the Governor there is just a tonne of debris on the streets, we know boats were really flown in onto the roads, people can't get past it".

The huge storm weakened as it moved up the state's western coast overnight but Miami and other urban areas have been battered and flooded.

- Georgia was already feeling the effects of the storm, with more than 17,000 customers without power in Savannah. Wind speeds reached 90 miles per hour and ripped trees out of the ground.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said the situation was not as bad as it could have been, but warned residents that risky storm surge continued.

- Two tornadoes touched down in Brevard County, destroying mobile homes in their path, officials said. FEMA chief Brock Long said some places won't have electricity for weeks. In flood-prone Miami, the largest U.S. city in Irma's path, cleaning crews began clearing branches, debris and fallen street signs at dawn on Monday. The islands were closed to the public Tuesday while damage is assessed, and several areas remain without water, power or communications, officials said.

More news: Power out? You could be in the dark for a week

Night-time curfews have been imposed in areas such as Miami, where 13 people were arrested on suspicion of looting.

The storm has been blamed for more than 40 deaths, including six in Florida. "You can't survive these storm surges", he said.

Evacuees from Hurricane Irma are returning to the Florida Keys, where sunrise will give them a first glimpse of devastation that has left countless homes and businesses in ruins.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued a mandatory evacuation for some barrier islands. Schools in much of the state planned to close Monday.

Local newscasters spent all weekend chasing the storm, but in the age of social media the most harrowing footage of Hurricane Irma comes from individuals in the region. Cities as far inland as Atlanta are under a tropical storm watch Monday and Tuesday. At least 35 people were killed in the Caribbean.

Marg Gagliostro, hurricane survivor, "it was surreal just looked like a war zone walking down here with all the palm trees down and other trees snapped just like toothpicks", the Gagliostro family rode out Hurricane Irma from their fourth floor condo.
