Iran FM urges swift United Nations action on Rohingya crisis

On Sunday, leaders who had gathered in Astana, Kazakhstan, for a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation issued a statement condemning the "systematic brutal acts" against the Rohingya and asked Myanmar to allow a United Nations fact-finding mission into the country to investigate.

ARSA, which has been active since previous year, initially launched small assaults against the military.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said in an address to the Human Rights Council that the military operation, prompted by Rohingya militants attacks on police posts on August 25, "is clearly disproportionate and without regard for basic principles of global law".

The rights group said that one civilian near the border had been killed and that three people, including two children, had been seriously injured by mines in the past week.

Myanmar on Sunday rebuffed a ceasefire declared by Muslim Rohingya insurgents to enable the delivery of aid to thousands of displaced people in the violence-racked state of Rakhine, declaring simply that it did not negotiate with terrorists.

After fleeing violence in Myanmar in October 2016, Rohingya refugees live in overcrowded makeshift sites in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

The new camp will help relieve some pressure on existing settlements in the Bangladeshi border district of Cox's Bazar, where 313,000 have arrived since August 25, according to the United Nations.

"It is expected that the United Nations act swiftly and undertake all necessary measures towards addressing worldwide concerns about the deteriorating situation in Myanmar", Zarif said in a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres published on Friday.

In addition, Awad drew attention to the insufficient global outrage about the ongoing persecution of Rohingya Muslims, and urged people to put pressure on their government in order to stop the "genocide" in Rakhine state.

A Myanmar military source told Reuters last week that landmines had been laid along the border in the 1990s to prevent trespassing and the military had since tried to remove them.

About a dozen Muslim villages were burned down on Friday and Saturday in the ethnically mixed Rathedaung region of Rakhine, two sources monitoring the situation said.

India's Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on September 5 said Rohingyas were illegal immigrants and stand to be deported.

Rohingyas are not recognised by Myanmar as its citizens and are called Bengali by them.

Myanmar's de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who won a Nobel peace prize for championing democracy, has been accused of failing to speak out for the Rohingya - a minority that has long complained of persecution - in an attempt to appease the Buddhist majority.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has warned about the continuation of the ongoing crackdown on Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, urging the worldwide community and the United Nations in particular to take swift action to end the crisis.
