DUSU polls: Voting concludes, results tomorrow

New Delhi, Sep 13 Counting of votes for DUSU elections was underway at a community hall near Kingsway Camp here today amid tight security.

The Delhi University Students' Union polls are held to elect office bearers to the posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary.

In 2016, ABVP's candidates were elected to the posts of president, vice president, and secretary, while NSUI's candidate became the joint secretary.

The order came on a plea by the university seeking modification of its September 8 interim order by which it had allowed NSUI presidential candidate, Rocky Tuseed, to contest the election but directed the varsity not to declare the results for the post of the president. We can expect the Delhi University election results by today afternoon. The High Court also pulled up the Delhi Police for not taking action or arresting the violators for the offence of defacing public properties which attracts a maximum jail term of 10 years. The elections are for the academic year 2017-2018. NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, claimed they had won in 18 of 32 colleges - a claim refuted by the ABVP, the student wing of the RSS. "The result for the post of the president will be declared as per schedule". However, the High Court order added, "The poll outcome will be subject to its final decision in the pending petition". "The outcome of the election result will be subject to the outcome of this main petition", HC observed. This year, the university's chief election officer (CEC) had made a special appeal to students to come out and vote.

The court on Monday had issued show cause notice to candidates of various parties contesting elections as to why action should not be taken against them for allegedly defacing public property with their posters. Polling for the DUSU elections in morning schools ended at 2 pm and voting reserved for students of evening colleges commenced at 3 pm and it continued till 7.30 pm.

Some technical glitch in the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) was reported at Shahid Bhagat Singh College, and which caused a half an hour delay in voting in the morning. Also, the party and the contestants who have won in the DUSU elections will have a grand celebration.
