BMW reveals M8 GTE race auto

No images have been released but bosses are expecting the GTE to makes its racing debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January next year. The power transmission in the BMW M8 GTE takes place via a sequential, six-speed racing gearbox.

BMW has revealed its 2018 Le Mans racer at the Frankfurt Motor Show, providing us with a fresh look at the firm's next flagship coupe - the upcoming, 600bhp+ M8, which will rival the Mercedes-AMG S 63 Coupe in the high-performance, luxury coupe market when it arrives next year.

The sloping rear roofline gives the grand tourer a sleek appearance, with what appears to be space for a 2+2 setup in the production auto. As such, the M8 GTE weighs in at 1,200kg. But before you can buy either the regular 8 Series or the M8, you'll get to see BMW return to the World Endurance Championship with the M8 GTE race auto. Nor for the road-going BMW M8, either... The V8 engine's cylinder block and cylinder head are from the upcoming 8-series production vehicle, and has more than 500bhp at its disposal as per race regulations.

Nestling in that mean-looking front-end is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8.

Set to go up against Ferrari, Ford, Aston Martin, Porsche, and Chevrolet, BMW ultimately hopes to win at Le Mans.

We've already seen a Concept 8 Series - showcased on the shores of Lake Como in Italy. Called the M8 GTE, this new race auto will form the basis of BMW's return to the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2018.

"The FIA WEC and the IMSA series in North America are top competitive environments for our new challenger".

"We are bringing cutting-edge technology to the top global class of GT racing, whilst at the same time tying in with our tradition at Le Mans".

"Development is on schedule, and we can hardly wait to see the vehicle challenging for victories in 2018".
