Big 12 Notebook: Oklahoma teams stay flawless, Kansas State struggles

After three weeks of play, the Big 12 Conference will start to see it members go head-to-head this weekend.

Some Big 12 action is going to hit the nation's picture-box this weekend, as the TCU Horned Frogs are set to do battle with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

TCU made a statement about its ability to compete in the Big 12 this season when it drummed the Razorbacks in Fayetteville. Rudolph torched the Pitt defense last week for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns in an nearly flawless performance.

Oregon State has played three bad games and seen their rating rise eight full points, up to 41 and seven back of their nearest league rival. Oklahoma State has wins of 35, 37 and 38.

"We've got him back in order", OSU coach Mike Gundy said.

-LB Travin Howard, a senior, had six tackles against SMU, the third straight game he's pulled down half a dozen. He pre-determined a throw prior to the snap and he didn't progress. And he did a job for us, except for one time and it cost him an interception.

The Horned Frogs (3-0) certainly have a hard task ahead, when it relates to slowing down the Cowboys' offense that hasn't been challenged when you look at the final scores.

In any case, regardless of whether Heisman candidate Mason Rudolph is once again enjoying the fourth quarter from the sidelines or not, this is a game Oklahoma State simply can't lose if the College Football Playoff is the end goal. Their defense has allowed a combined total of 43 points in their first three games. "They're scoring 50 points a game. Ten games into it now, you find out about individual players' tendencies". "For me, it's how do I stop it and how do I slow it down?"

"You're not going to get me to say anything outside of the norm here", Patterson said this week. Patterson is one of college football's top defensive minds while Oklahoma State's offense might have the nation's best collection of skill players.

The good news for Oklahoma State, though, is that the general expectation is for the Cowboys to come out on top and advance to 4-0. "Got ourselves to 3-0".

"They're definitely different schematically", Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley said of the Bears. "I knew they scored a lot". And that's been a good program. The Bulldogs have moved from 29 all the way down to 19 and into the second spot in the vaunted Southeastern Conference as they start league play. "When we have good skill guys, he's responsible for delegating the ball to the people based on what they give us". If this team truly is a contender, they need to show us more.

Northern Illinois celebrated their 21-17 victory at Nebraska like it was their biggest upset victory ever, and while the Big Ten Cornhuskers were 12-point favourites, it wasn't really a huge shock. The Jayhawks, meanwhile, are 0-2 against the MAC.

"I've been studying all three sides this (Monday) morning".

Khan: If the Jayhawks can't beat OH - to whom they lost last week - then West Virginia is likely to make quick work of them. Boone Pickens Stadium has also been notoriously hard for Patterson to navigate, as he's won less than half of the games in the last 10 seasons. Regardless of ranking, they're both in the Top 4, which is all that matters at this point. You know, a couple of breaks here and a couple of breaks there they'd been sitting right there at 3-0. Hill has thrown 8 touchdowns in the first 3 games, with 737 passing yards.

The Knights are one of three teams from the state of Florida (No. 12 Florida State and No. 14 Miami are the others) that hasn't played since the opening week because of Hurricane Irma. Texas Tech's at 621, Oregon's at 609, and the Cowboys are producing 607 yards per game.
