Bake Off: Paul Hollywood in Nazi outfit apology

The pictures show Hollywood stood at a bar with a pint next to a friend, who was also dressed in a Nazi uniform.

But after fans blasted the GBBO veteran for his questionable fancy dress choice, Paul has now spoken out saying he is "devastated" to have caused offence and insisted he was dressed as a character from the TV series 'Allo 'Allo.

'Everyone who knows me, knows I am incredibly proud of the efforts of those, including my own grandfather, who fought against the Nazis during the war.

On Sunday, The Sun published photos of the chef posing in a Nazi uniform - complete with an Iron Cross, a Nazi eagle, and a swastika armband - in a pub during a New Year's Eve party.

Paul appeared in an episode of Who Do You Think You Are? in 2015 in which he learned about his grandfather's heroics during World War Two.

Hollywood, 51, was smiling in the photo in a pub with a friend who was wearing a military uniform.

'But some found it offensive - especially the fact they thought it was really amusing. "Top tip, don't dress as a Nazi then you f**king idiot", one person commented.

The show, which ran on BBC in the 1980s, was set in a small cafe in France while under Nazi rule during World War II.

In a statement (via The Mirror), Paul said he was dressed as a character from BBC sitcom 'All 'Allo!. Smoking & drinking in uniform is disgraceful'.

In his statement, Hollywood said he had been on his way to a TV comedy-themed party 14 years ago when the pictures were taken.

A spokesman for the Campaign Against Antisemitism said: "Wearing these costumes for fun is an insult to the British soldiers and civilians who died repelling Hitler's onslaught and the 6 million Jews and many others who were murdered. We do not expect any further action".
