5 things you need to know as Irma approaches the Carolinas

In areas where peak surge coincided with high tide, water levels were predicted to rise as much as 4 to 6 feet above normally dry land from the northeast Florida coast to the central SC coast on the storm's Atlantic side, and from near Clearwater, Fla.to the state's Big Bend area on the Gulf of Mexico side.

Authorities said Monday there have been no reports of deaths in SC from storms related to Tropical Storm Irma.

In the state's northeastern corner, Jacksonville felt the brunt of Irma's storm surges as the banks of the city's rivers and tributaries overflowed, inundating city streets. Winds could occasionally gust as strong as 60 miles per hour at times.

The clouds that spawned a few tornadoes off the east coast of Florida also are expected to do the same in SC.

"STORM TOTAL RAINFALL: Widespread 4-8" across our SC counties and our Georgia counties, with isolated higher amounts.

IN THE EXTENDED FORECAST: Conditions will gradually improve through the day Tuesday.

In the meantime, the National Weather Service this morning deployed survey teams to assess areas around the state. However, South Carolina will see more rain and a higher effect for severe weather Monday and this pattern will continue north towards the North Carolina coast into Tuesday.

In downtown Charleston, storm surge and high surf have gone over the Battery, causing flooding.

Flood warnings covered much of eastern Georgia and extreme northeast Florida Monday morning. 3-5 inches of rainfall expected Monday.

Nearby states also began to feel the wallop of Irma on Monday.

David Lohr, Travis Waldron and Sebastian Murdock contributed reporting from Florida.

Irma made two landfalls on Sunday: Over the Florida Keys and one on Marco Island, Fla. "If you look out your window right now, we have tropical storm wind gusts".
