Wenger Hails Giroud's Impact, Arsenal Character In Comeback Win Vs Leicester

Wenger has always been desperate to keep Giroud because he offers something so different with his aerial presence but was also willing to let him leave if he felt that he needed a guarantee that he would start more regularly in this World Cup season.

In the league's first Friday night start, Arsene Wenger's side was trailing 3-2 with seven minutes remaining but Ramsey grabbed the equaliser and Giroud headed in an 85th-minute victor.

Giroud proved to be the hero of the opening night of the 2017-18 Premier League season on Friday (11 August), demonstrating trademark strength to hold off centre-backs Harry Maguire and Wes Morgan to head home the winning goal in a thrilling 4-3 home defeat of plucky Leicester City.

But the home side's pressure in the final half hour turned the game back their way and Ramsey equalised with a shot from close range with seven minutes remaining.

Giroud's compatriot Alexandre Lacazette marked his league debut with a goal in just 94 seconds, only for Shinji Okazaki to level for the Foxes less than three minutes later. Danny Welbeck then made it 2-2 on the stroke of half time, but Vardy had given Leicester the lead once again in the 56th minute.

"You know, I must say I opened the door for him at some stage because I know that it's important for him to play. (We had) 70 percent possession, 27 shots on goal, Leicester had three shots on target and scored three so that shows you how efficient they are".

Arsene Wenger has strengthened his squad this summer.

'When we thought about the key qualities, they were the experience, the gravitas for a club like this, a record of success in the game.

As Arsenal fans went berserk, Lacazette's celebration was fitting as he simply stood in place with his arms outstretch and a beaming smile while his teammates mobbed him just left of the penalty spot.

"I feel as well that the goals we conceded, we can work together to get rid of that because one was a ball we lost in the build-up and we conceded two goals on corners".
