Trump to take executive action into China's trade practices

A possible move by the United States to launch an investigation into China's unfair trade practices based on Section 301 of the Trade Act has Taiwan anxious because many of its products sold to the USA are processed or assembled in China.

"China's unfair trade practices and industrial policies, including forced technology transfer and intellectual property theft, harm the USA economy and workers", a second official said.

Trump, now on a 17-day working summer vacation at his golf resort in New Jersey, is returning to the White House for a day on Monday to sign this executive order directing the US Trade Representative to probe the matter.

Trump was reported to direct U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to determine if an investigation is warranted of "any of China's laws, policies, practices or actions that may be unreasonable or discriminatory, and that may be harming American intellectual property, innovation and technology".

Bedminster, N.J.: Even as he seeks Beijing's help on North Korea, President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order asking his trade office to consider investigating China for the alleged theft of American technology and intellectual property, an administration official said Saturday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the order before Trump's formal announcement.

In 1962, as the United States and the Soviet Union wobbled toward nuclear confrontation, then-President John F. Kennedy got his predecessor on the phone.

The officials said that matter, and the trade issue, are not linked. Many US businesses must create joint ventures with Chinese companies and turn over valuable technology assets, a practice that Washington says stifles US economic growth.

"At present, relevant parties should exercise restraint and avoid words and actions that would escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula", Xi said, according to the statement provided by China's government.

They added that the trade measure would be carried out under the rules of global law and would not trigger greater conflict with China.

They said that USA companies had long suffered because of Chinese intellectual-property violations, and that they expected Congress and the business community to support the measure.

"The relationship could spiral out of control, particularly if the movement on the trade front is combined with growing tensions over how to respond to North Korea", said Scott Kennedy, a China expert at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. He said it would be premature to speculate on actions that could eventually be taken against China, and added that the issue could be resolved through "negotiated agreement".

Trump has requested similar inquiries on trade, but the reports haven't been delivered on deadline. "Our foolish past leaders have allowed them to make hundreds of billions of dollars a year in trade, yet. they do NOTHING for us with North Korea, just talk". Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had hoped to finish the review by June, but parts of it remain in the final stages of interagency review.
