Trump again cites 'military' option against North Korea

Trump again cites 'military' option against North Korea

"Trump and Macron pledged to work together with allies and partners to enforce United Nations sanctions and achieve denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", the White House said.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.) quickly walked back remarks he made Friday that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was acting "more responsible" than President Donald Trump, saying it was "tailor-made for somebody to misuse".

Trump raised alarm around the world - and particularly in Asia - by warning that North Korea would face "fire and fury like the world has never seen" if it were to keep threatening the US.

Analysts say Hwasong-12 and 14 missiles, the latest to be developed by North Korea and the subject of recent tests, have been moved into position but it is not clear if they are ready to be fired. "I think we're not closer to war than a week ago", McMaster said on ABC's "This Week".

According to The Washington Post, Mattis told a pool of reporters Wednesday that "of course there's a military option" in place to address North Korea, but "we want to use diplomacy".

A White House statement said Trump and President Emmanuel Macron had discussed "the increasingly unsafe situation associated with North Korea's destabilising and escalatory behaviour".

Chinese President Xi Jinping made a plea for cool-headedness over escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea in a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, urging both sides to avoid words or actions that could worsen the situation.

North Korea has responded in kind, assuring the United States of "total defeat" in the event of a war and claiming it is preparing for an attack on the American military base in Guam in mid-August.

President Trump over the past week has intensified his rhetoric against North Korea. But China says it alone can not compel Pyongyang to change course.
