Tropical Depression Eight forms east of the Bahamas

When it does, it will be given the name Gert.

Tropical Depression Eight has formed a few hundred miles northeast of the Bahamas, and it could pick up surf along the East Coast.

A disturbance about 300 miles east of the Turks and Caicos Islands could develop into a tropical depression over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said Friday night (Aug. 11). It's expected to remain east of the United States. It is expected to be pushed off to the east by a non-tropical system on Tuesday or Wednesday according to AccuWeather, and is not seen as a direct threat to the USA coast.

Maximum winds are 35mph with higher gusts.

"At this time, the more likely scenario is for the tropical system to stay offshore", AccuWeather meteorologist Dan Kottlowski said in a report.

However, a turn to the north and eventually northeast is forecast to begin tonight, which should steer the storm away from the U.S.

The chance of formation over the next two day is at 60%, and 70% over the next five days.

Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and the depression is expected to become a Tropical Storm later Sunday.
