Strong quake strikes off Indonesian island of Sumatra

Chairman of the West Sumatra branch of the Indonesian Association of Geologists, Ade Edward, said the epicenter was known as a subduction zone, which was prone to big earthquakes.

The quake hit at a depth of 35 kilometres at 10:08 AM (0308 GMT) 73 kilometres west of Bengkulu, news agency AFP reported. "The natural disaster was quite strong and shallow, it was felt all the way to Padang, West Sumatra, but there was no threat of a tsunami", he said.

Residents ran from their homes and there were power outages in some areas but no reports of casualties or structural damage to buildings, Nugroho said.
