Solar eclipse will help scientists learn more about 'space weather'

During a solar eclipse, such as the one that will happen on August 21, the moon comes between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the light of the sun.

As the moon moves in front of the sun that day, a "path of totality" will develop in portions of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and SC.

The first total solar eclipse in almost a century is 10 days away and while it will be visible in Rhode Island, some locals are hitting the road to get an even better look at the rare celestial event.

During a full solar eclipse, the moon and sun line up perfectly and create a shadow that falls on the Earth.

One orbit later, the station will cross the path of the eclipse in the extreme northwest following a trajectory that will carry the lab over central Canada on the way to the North Atlantic.

NASA is set to study the Earth's ionosphere during the upcoming total solar eclipse in the United States, to better understand the Sun's relationship to the region of the atmosphere where satellites orbit and radio signals are reflected towards our planet.

The total solar eclipse is coming, and as the excitement builds, so does the worry that it will leave behind a nation of eye problems.

What can happen when you look directly at the sun? The last bead gleams so brightly around the moon's silhouette, as the sun's spiky corona becomes visible, that the eclipse looks like a diamond ring in the sky. David Baron, science reporter and author of "American Eclipse", said.

But as science evolved, mankind debunked these superstitions and, in turn, demystified solar eclipses. The eclipse will be visible here from about noon to 3 p.m.

A rather interesting result, though, is if you split the above "Total Cloud Cover" map into its component cloud layers - high level, mid-level and low level - as seen below. The sun is so bright that we squint, our eyes tear up, and we look away.

If you want a more expensive option, try number 14 welder's glass goggles. Eventually, scientists like Sir Arthur Eddington, whose observations of deflected starlight during a 1919 solar eclipse confirmed Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, considered the rare celestial events as prime opportunities to learn more about the solar system and beyond. Eclipses of the sun can be predicted thousands of years in advance. Or maybe it disappears in a valley on the moon, and it lingers a little bit longer and so the eclipse is gonna start late for you. You can also make a nice pinhole projector inside a box, such as a large cereal box or shipping box.

There's a very good reason that it's hard for us to gauge the impact of the eclipse: We just aren't accustomed to it. "For Kearney, the previous one was more than 800 years ago". These can easily be made by simply poking a pin-sized hole (thus the name) in a piece of cardboard, and then holding the cardboard such that the sunlight passes through the hole and falls onto a viewing surface (a white piece of paper, sidewalk, garage door, etc.) To focus the image, the observer simply moves the cardboard farther or nearer from the viewing surface.
