Rory McIlroy still out of tune at PGA Championship

Second-round co-leader Hideki Matsuyama and Chris Stroud, who began his third round tied for second after finishing his second round Saturday morning, are one behind Kisner at 6-under 207.

Hideki Matsuyama and Kevin Kisner faced the toughest Quail Hollow had to offer and share the lead in the PGA Championship going into the weekend of the year's final major.

The one big weakness in Matsuyama's game has been on the greens where he is 167 on Tour in strokes gained/ putting at -.306.

But he recovered quickly, draining a 14m birdie bomb at the par-3 13th before backing up with another birdie on the 14th.

However, he found trouble in the rough on the long 15th and dropped a shot before two more shots went at the 16th and the 18th - Quail Hollow's notorious "Green Mile" to send him to the turn in over-over-par 37. Matsuyama shot a 73, and Stroud returned a 71. "I haven't hit it this well this whole summer".

"I haven't hit it this well this whole summer " a lot of average finishes", Kisner said. "My bad shots are working out, my good shots are working out and I'm making putts". Yet, after going to three-over a couple of times, I am very happy with the way I finished with two birdies on seventh and ninth and a very short miss on eighth in between.

However, changes to several holes and the installation of bermuda rough and greens had not suited the four-time major victor, who struggled to consecutive rounds of 72 to lie 10 shots off the lead at halfway.

At one point Friday, Fowler went over to talk to National Basketball Association star Andre Iguodola - who was following the group that included both Fowler and Rory McIlroy - while waiting to hit a shot. "I hope he slows down and gives the rest of us a chance".

"It makes me nervous being in the lead after two days at a major, but I'm really looking forward to the next two days". Well, get this. Having hit nine of the 14 fairways, he sounded disgusted at his driving.

Kisner finished with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. On the back nine, he had three bogeys in a row from third to fifth, before stemming the rot with a par and then closed the day with three straight birdies for a card of one-under 70 and was Tied-15th.

"That is a really hard hole", Matsuyama said.

Kisner, 33, endured four runner-up finishes in 2015 before a breakthrough first US PGA Tour victory at Sea Island, Georgia, in his 109th attempt.

Marc Leishman bounced back from his opening 75 with an even-par 71, while Scott Hend sits at six over through 14 holes and will need to pick up at least one shot in the closing stretch to stick around.

He had a bogey and a birdie on sixth and seventh, as he turned in three-over.
