Microsoft agrees to Windows changes after Kaspersky complaint

In a Wednesday blog post, Microsoft explained that it would work more closely with antivirus vendors to help them make their products compatible with upcoming Windows updates.

Kaspersky first filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft in its native Russian Federation last November, followed by complaints to the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office in July.

In response to the Kaspersky antitrust complaint, Microsoft will be making major changes to Windows 10 in the Fall Creators Update.

"We are absolutely satisfied with the changes that will be implemented in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and we will be taking all necessary steps to withdraw our claims and inform all regulatory bodies that we no longer have any matters for Microsoft to address", he said. Kaspersky had complained Microsoft was favouring its own security software over rivals, and the company has now agreed to give third-party sellers greater access in the Windows OS.

Moscow-based cyber security firm Kaspersky Lab said on Wednesday it would withdraw antitrust complaints made in Europe against Microsoft after the US technology giant agreed to change how it delivers security updates to Windows users.

Microsoft had poo-pooed the complaint but previously confessed that an update changed the way that Windows 10 deals with AV incompatibilities - by switching them off without warning the user.

To placate Kaspersky, Microsoft will allow AV products to "use their own alerts and notifications to renew antivirus products before and after they have expired". Windows will also change how it notifies users of expirations, moving from an alert that could be ignored to one that persists until the user takes action.

"We will give [antivirus] partners better visibility and certainty around release schedules for feature updates".

However, these changes have not been enough for Kaspersky, which claimed that Microsoft is still engaging in tactics such as crippling its products, restricting its advertising ability and even advising users to uninstall third-party anti-virus software.

Kaspersky is withdrawing its European antitrust complaint against Microsoft today.

Russia's Federal Antimonopoly service said in November 2016 that it had opened a case against Microsoft over an alleged abuse of market dominance.

"Microsoft's primary objective is to keep customers protected and we are confident that the security features of Windows 10 comply with competition laws", the company said in a statement.

Microsoft addressed another of Kaspersky's complaints by saying it would let antivirus firms issue their own renewal alerts before and after customers' subscriptions expire - something Kaspersky said it was blocked from doing. "The more your security solution is compatible with your operating system, the less it affects performance and stability".
