Markets Right Now: Stocks drift lower on Wall Street

The rhetoric, which began late Tuesday and continued into Friday, cracked the calm that has enveloped the market for months and interrupted stocks' march higher. They outweighed gains in health-care stocks and elsewhere.

Winners and Losers: Live-events company Live Nation saw its stock climb more than five percent Thursday on news that concert ticket sales jumped 22 percent from a year ago.

The CBOE Volatility Index - a measure of investors' expectations for swings in the S&P 500 over the next 30 days - surged Thursday to its highest level since U.S. Election Day. But by the end of the day, traders appeared to take the geopolitical drama in stride.

The S&P 500 index dropped 35.81 points to 2,438.21, while the Nasdaq composite index slid 135.46 points to 6,216.87.

At the close trading in NY, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 204.69 points, or 0.9%, to 21,844.01, its biggest one-day fall since May 17. Earlier, the average had been down more than 88 points. The Nasdaq composite lost 76 points, or 1.2 percent, to 6,275. The major index futures are now pointing to a modestly higher open for the markets, with the Dow futures up by 21 points.

High-flying technology names suffered outsized losses on the day, with Apple falling 3.2 percent, Amazon 2.6 percent and Facebook 2.2 percent.

BAD TRIPS: Priceline Group slid 8.2 percent after the online travel booking service issued a profit forecast that was weaker than analysts were expecting. The stock lost $142.20, to $1,906.80.

Disney dropped 4.5 percent after reporting a weak quarter and saying it would pull its movies from Netflix and start two of its own video streaming services.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was down 1.1 percent to 7,306, while France's CAC 40 fell 1.1 percent to 5,058. And Blue Apron shares dipped after its first earnings report as a public company.

The Russell 2000 is up 15.41 points, or 1.1 percent. The company booked a hefty charge and said its CFO is leaving the company.

Brent crude futures lost 0.8 percent to $51.5 per barrel on persistent oversupply worries despite a bigger-than-expected drawdown in USA crude inventories. Brent crude, used to price worldwide oils, gained 56 cents, to $52.70, in London. Silver also rose, gaining 43 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $16.82 an ounce.

Ralph Lauren Corp. shares gained $10.38, or 13.3 percent, to $88.53, while peer-to-peer loan company LendingClub Corp. added 99 cents, or 18.1 percent, to $6.45.

The dollar fell to 109.85 yen from 110.48 yen late Tuesday. The euro slid to $1.1732 from $1.1752.
