Himachal Pradesh landslide: Six killed, rescue operations underway

The incident happened near Mandi-Pathankot highway late last night.

The administration has called the Army and NDRF teams for rescue operation as many people are still buried under debris.

To further intensify the rescue and relief operations, the National Disaster Response Force has been summoned, said the official adding that at least five people have been rescued so far in the ongoing operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the deaths that occurred due to a landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday offered condolence to the families of the deceased in the Mandi landslide and requested the Himachal Pradesh Government to provide every possible aid.

One of the state roadways bus was hit by the landslide debris and skidded off the road, falling down by nearly a kilometre.

Shimla, SP, D W Negi said that private bus met with an accident in the jurisdiction of Nerwa Police Station of Shimla district located close to the border of Sirmaur district.

"The other bus has been swept away, 800 metres down the steep hillside".

One of the buses was travelling to Chamba from Manali while the other was travelling to Katra in Jammu from Manali when the landslide occurred.

The number of people who are feared dead in the landslide is likely to increase, Mandi Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam told reporters.

Himachal Transport Minister GS Bali said that at least 50 are feared to have washed away.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal have rushed to the spot.
