Helicopter Crash Kills Two in Albemarle County

A state police helicopter patrolling the race riots in Charlottesville has crashed on Old Farm Road, near the Birdwood Golf Course at the University of Virginia in Albemarle County.

One person was killed Saturday and 19 were hurt when a speeding auto slammed into another vehicle that was navigating through a throng of counter-protesters in Charlottesville, where a "Unite the Right" rally of white nationalist and other right-wing groups was to take place.

Helicopters were reported flying overhead in Charlottesville as Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency after what is believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalists in a decade.

The crash was also tweeted about by the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters president, Robert Bragg III. There are two confirmed fatalities.

The helicopter crashed near Old Farm Road in Albemarle County, which is just outside the city. Police have sealed off the area.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
