Gold for Pearson at world athletics championships

The Australian was already seen as one of the greatest hurdlers of all time heading into this final, though her triumph here after a fractured wrist in 2015 and a hamstring injury in 2016 seeing her miss the World Championships and Olympics respectively will only add to her status as an all-time great.

Back at the stadium where she landed Olympic gold in 2012, Pearson shocked her American challengers, including world record holder Kendra Harrison, to take victory in 12.59 seconds. But when she clocked 12.48 seconds in the London Diamond League last month - her fastest time for five years - she realised she was in medal-contending form.

"When I knew I felt that I knew it was in me to do it".

"(She amazes me) every day", said Kieran Pearson, who travels the world track and field circuit with his wife.

On her joyous finish-line exclamations, she said: "I don't know if it was surprise but the emotion just escaped my body because I was so excited and so happy to have achieved what I've worked so hard for".

"I love this stadium, I love the people and I'm so happy to have been back here doing the same thing again (winning gold)". Victory went to her veteran compatriot Dawn Harper-Nelson, the 33-year-old 2008 Olympic champion looking in remarkable shape as she won the race and then promptly performed a cartwheel in delight.

"I can not believe it, it's insane", said Dutkiewicz. I had a flow. "On the finish line I thought I had finished fourth - madness!" In contrast to the experience of Pearson and Harper-Nelson, this is just Dutkiewicz's second senior medal, though the German will be confident heading into the European Championships in her home nation next year.

Once Pearson arrived at the pre-championships training camp in Tonbridge she handed responsibility for the final stage of her buildup to Australian head coach Craig Hilliard and team coach Matt Beckenham.

"They expect me to be winning all the time but I'm pleased to be in my first world final and have learned a lot".

The Jamaican, who had looked in great shape in the morning heats, was never at the races after hitting the first hurdle and clattered several more to round off a disappointing defence of her title.
