French leader urges calm in North Korea crisis

Xi Jinping, the leader of North Korea's key ally China, urged Trump on Saturday to avoid rhetoric that could inflame tensions, after the USA leader ramped up his warnings to Pyongyang, saying the Stalinist regime would "truly regret" taking hostile action against the United States.

In an apparent response to Trump's tweet, a statement issued by North Korea's official KCNA news agency claimed the president is "driving the situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war".

Carter also said China's influence of China in Pyongyang "seems to be greatly reduced since Kim Jong Un became the North Korean leader in December 2011". "Our leaders need to encourage talks between North Korea and other countries, especially China and Russian Federation".

The agreement came during telephonic talks between US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.

France is a member of the Security Council, which approved fresh sanctions on North Korea this month for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile testing. "During all these visits, the North Koreans emphasized that they wanted peaceful relations with the United States and their neighbors, but were convinced that we planned a preemptive military strike against their country". He added that China and North Korea understand that Trump "is actually prepared to use military force - credibility that prior administrations simply lacked".

A commitment to peace by the United States and North Korea is crucial.

The Chinese foreign ministry said Xi urged Trump to avoid "words and deeds" that would "exacerbate" the already-tense situation and to exercise restraint and seek a political settlement.

Trump has stepped up warnings that Kim's regime would face a devastating military strike if it continued threatening the U.S. On Friday, he said that if Kim makes any "overt threat" or strike at a U.S. territory or ally "he will truly regret it and he will regret it fast". For one, they didn't want to put somebody in a corner. Trump has often used sharp words to argue that China isn't doing enough to rein in North Korea, and has threatened punitive measures on trade if Xi fails to act.
