EPL: Burnley stun nine-man Chelsea

Chelsea did their best to launch a positive response, but the Blues were struggling, and Burnley incredibly doubled their lead in the 39th minute when Stephen Ward broke into the home side's box before finding the top corner with a stunning strike.

Burnley hit the post with a free-kick and the match ended with yet another surge from Chelsea who had run out of time to complete their fightback.

It got worse for Chelsea four minutes later as Vokes rose well to head home Defour's cross for his second of the game, 0-3.

"It was a pity because our fight in the second half was very good", said Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

Vokes put Burnley ahead in the 24th minute, volleying in from Matthew Lowton's cross.

Alvaro Morata made his Stamford Bridge debut for the ineffective Michy Batshuayi just before the hour mark, and it was his introduction that seemed to turn the tide in favour of the home side.

Coming into the new season as champions, Chelsea's prospective attacking problems had one silver lining: their defense would be undoubtedly solid.

He brushed aside questions about reported tension with Chelsea's board over signing new players and said he was not anxious because three key players - Eden Hazard, Pedro and Victor Moses - could return from injury and suspension for Chelsea's next game against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

Nevertheless, David Luiz pulled back a second for Chelsea when Morata flicked on a long pass from Azpilicueta, and the Brazilian was on hand to fire past Heaton for his second goal for Chelsea since rejoining the club last season.

All seemed lost when Fabregas earned a second yellow card for lunging in on Cork nine minutes from time.

"I am not anxious", Conte said. Chelsea begin the new season with a surprise defeat. Me, I have to start to study a new formation with ten or nine players. I don't like this type of idea, someone sending a message. "This win won't do us any harm at all but it won't make our season".

While Antonio Conte has added to his squad this summer with the major signings of Alvaro Morata, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Antonio Rudiger, they've also continued to let players leave the club.

Rooney marked his first league start for Everton since rejoining his boyhood team from Manchester United by netting in a 1-0 win over Stoke at Goodison Park.
