ALERT: 700, 000 potentially contaminated eggs in United Kingdom food chain

It is an insecticide which is not permitted for use around food-producing animals. Almost 5 billion of Germany's imported eggs came from the Netherlands, the country at the center of the ongoing scandal.

The French agriculture ministry confirmed on Friday that 250,000 contaminated eggs had been "on the market" in France between April and July.

The ministry said it was monitoring the situation and testing eggs, egg products and chicken meat as a precautionary measure.

An egg crisis is engulfing Europe as million of eggs have been withdrawn or destroyed for being suspected of containing high levels of insecticide. It is a common ingredient in veterinary products for getting rid of fleas, lice and ticks in animals.

It is moderately toxic and can cause organ damage in humans, but a large number of contaminated eggs would need to be eaten for any negative health effects to be observed. Eggs containing Fipronil residues haven't been sold as fresh eggs in the United Kingdom, but in other European countries they have.

"We can confirm that they are eggs that hail from one of the infected farms in the Netherlands", Nikolas Kühn Hove, a spokesperson for Fødevarestyrelsen, told TV2 News.

"No contaminated eggs have been imported to Malta".

Figures from Bord Bia show that egg imports from the Netherlands were valued at €592,000 previous year and volumes of 267 tonnes (product weight).

British food safety authorities believe around 700,000 contaminated eggs have been imported into the country, and the Food Standards Agency has issued a list of products in which the eggs could be found.

The agency said the recalled products were processed foods containing eggs.

The FSA said as this represents 0.007% of the eggs we consume in the United Kingdom every year, there is unlikely to be 'any risk to public health from consuming these foods'.

"This is just the latest of a number of food safety issues connected to eggs produced outside of the United Kingdom in recent years".

Earlier in the day, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis called an urgent ministerial meeting in the light of the ongoing scandal with eggs.
